Shows FAQ

What kinds of shows do you offer?

Union Comedy primarily offers longform improv shows (a character-driven narrative-leaning style of improv) featuring local performers trained at Union Comedy and elsewhere.

Our premiere show The Pickle (Saturdays @ 9p) has a rotating cast consisting of some of Boston's best improvisers inspired by true stories each week. The Weekend Show (Fridays & Saturdays @ 7:30p) showcases our house teams, curated through auditions. Friday Night Fusion (Fridays @ 9p) features a combination of house teams and local independent teams. Cagematch (Sundays @ 6:30p) pits two teams head to head where the audience votes for the winner.

As a training center, Union also prioritizes providing stage time to students and other performers in training. Every Sunday, we host a regular jam, where anyone can sign up to perform.

Will I have to participate or can I just watch?

Some shows have elements of (voluntary) audience participation. Most improv shows start by asking the audience for a "suggestion," a word or answer to a question used as inspiration. In general, though, you can expect to sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

How long are shows?

Most of our shows are about 1 hour. The Kerfuffle, which runs quarterly, is usually closer to 2hrs.

Are your shows family friendly?

Our shows are PG13 at minimum and can get to R-level content and language. While we do not have an age minimum to attend shows, we cannot guarantee any of the shows will be appropriate for 16 or younger.

How do I get there?

Union Comedy is about a 15-min walk from both the Porter Square red line & Union Square green line stops. There are 2 MBTA bus routes (83 and 87) that stop right out front.

If you're driving, Somerville Ave has free 2-hour street parking. There is also a Bluebikes station across the street, so we encourage you to take advantage of that!

Do you serve alcohol or food?

We do not currently sell alcohol. We do sell bottled water and some snacks. You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks, as long as you also take it with you.

Is there a discount for large groups?

Yes! Orders of 8+ tickets automatically receive 20% off at checkout.

Can I hire you to perform at my event?

It's definitely possible! Email info@unioncomedy.com to discuss details.

How can I perform at Union Comedy?

If you have an existing improv team, we're always accepting rolling submissions for Cagematch, Friday Night Fusion, or our weekend jam. Email Pat at pkearnan@unioncomedy.com to book a date.

If you have an hour-long concept show, such as a genre narrative, tv show parody, character show, etc you can SUBMIT HERE for Union Comedy Presents (Saturdays at 6p). Sketch and other scripted shows are welcome to submit, as well. We do not currently charge a rental fee for independently produced shows in this time slot, however the theater retains 100% of ticket sales.

If you do not have a team, you are welcome to come play at our weekly jam, every Sunday at 5pm.

Auditions for our House Teams are every 6 months (in March and September). Sign up for our newsletter to stay updated!

And of course, keep an eye on our website & Instagram for updates.
